Since 2004, the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu and the Mie Prefectural Art Museum have organized exhibitions by sharing each collection and focusing upon various themes. the Mie Prefectural Art Museum presented Human Images in the Arts of the 20th Century in 2004, and the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Forest of the 20th Century Art in 2007, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu, Redon et son temps in 2006 and Japanese-Style Painters who Made an Epoch in 2009.

As the 5th exhibition of this series, the Mie Prefectural Art Museum presents an exhibition focusing upon the art of the latter half of the 20th century.

This exhibition consists of 5 parts;

Transformation of the human image
Following Human Images in the Arts of the 20th Century in 2004, we consider works representing a situation under which humanity as substance inclines to collapse and leads to hybridization with other kinds of being.
 
Expanding Flatness
The transformation of the human image, in one side, has resulted from the loss of reality which has supported representation of space by perspective and chiaroscuro originated in Renaissance. But the picture plane which once lost depth in perspective engendered works in which small touches, images or units cause an infinite chain-reaction sliding along the flat surface.

Matter: Seed of Metamorphosis
Materiality of painting, sculpture and so forth comes to the fore, as a sequel to the transformation of the human image and the representation of space. However here we think about works in which matter as something animate unlike "nature morte" conceives possibility to metamorphose.
 
Matter: Traces of Metamorphosis
Following part of 'Matter: Seed of Metamorphosis,' we present works in which we can feel some duration or memory of time by influencing matter.
 
Flatland Revisited
Following part of 'Expanding Flatness,' we present works, in which flat surface might conceive some depth different from that by perspective.
