30 years ago , in 1983/84 , the Japanese artist Leiko Ikemura was the fourth artist laureated with the grant of the City of Nuremberg called 'Stadtzeichner Nuernberg' for a one year artist residency. In 1972 Leiko Ikemura has left her home country to continue the Spanish studies she begun in Osaka in 1970 then in the spanish city Salamanca. In Granada and Seville, she studied sculpture and painting. In 1978 she completed her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Seville. From 1979 to 1983 Leiko Ikemura lived in Switzerland. After her stay in Nuremberg in 1984, the artist remained in Germany. Today she lives and works in Berlin, where she holds a professorship at the University of the Arts since 1991.
Leiko Ikemura's puzzling figures emerging out of dreams thematize the loss of cultural identity. They melt boundaries and unify polarities. The artist sees herself as working on the edge of two culteres and wants to bring together Japanese and Western culture in a synthesis. In the early 90s the female figure crystallized out as a main theme. The exhibition presents early works from the 80s combined with recent works.
