The exhibition marks an encounter between the quintessence of contemporary art (Toshioka Collection) and the serious competition between young Asian sculptors (Oita Asian Sculpture Exhibition).
In the late 1980s, while working in research and development at a pharmaceutical company, Mr. Sadao Toshioka became interested in the tribal art of South America and Oceania, and began collecting it. His interest shifted to contemporary art, and he visited galleries around the country, tirelessly collecting a wide range of works by both established and young artists from Japan and abroad.
In 2013, Oita Prefecture received a donation of the collection from Mr. Toshioka, which would be shown and researched extensively at the Prefectural Art Museum.
The Oita Asian Sculpture Exhibition has been held at the Asakura Fumio Memorial Hall in Bungo Ono since 1992, with the aim of discovering and fostering up-and-coming artists who will bring new life to the world of Asian sculpture
By bringing together the Toshioka Collection, the essence of contemporary art, and the Oita Asian Sculpture Exhibition, a stage for young Asian sculptors to compete in a serious competition, the exhibition brings to life the "diverse present" of artists who continue to boldly challenge new forms of expression unconstrained by existing frameworks.
