Sharing as Caring is a series of cabinet exhibitions on the theme of the Fukushima Incident in a consecutive five-year perspective beginning at Heidelberger Kunstverein in 2012. Every year for a span of ten weeks, the exhibitions update, explore and reflect the reality and cultural encounters connected to the situation after the Fukushima.
The previous shows presented art works and projects interacting with the residents in the northern part of Japan and collected the voices that do not easily reach to the outside of the country. Paying close attention to the subtle details of everyday life – confusion, confrontation, contemplation, changes and challenges -, these works capture the intricate relationship between emotions, economy and politics.
Sharing as Caring no.5 carries the title Beyond Documentation and focuses on the power of poetics that goes beyond the measured reality. With the most advanced technologies, enormous amount of measurement has taken place to calculate the influence of the incident as well as to predict the possibility of future natural disasters. While these measurements lay out reality in the perspective of science, poetics produce a different time-space. It allows us to see things at another speed and in a different scale, and the power of poetics is as strong as– or even stronger than - the measurements and the resulting documentation. And here we shouldn’t forget, that the power of the imaginary – the poetics - is political.
Beyond Documentation invites art works that embrace and tackle the ambivalence of the situation with artistic imaginaries – the things that has disappeared, been suspended or kept unfulfilled. The last show of the series at the Heidelberger Kunstverein aims at fostering ‘distribution of the sensible’ (Rancière, Jacques) not by adding more information but by creating sensory imaginaries.
