Exhibition organized by the Centre Pompidou and the Latvian National Art Museum
Participating artists are to be announced.
The Latvian National Art Museum in Riga is presenting a selection of works from the Centre Pompidou’s Graphic Arts Collection. These contemporary drawings come from generous gifts and donations made by collectors Florence and Daniel Guerlain. The exhibition features internationally renowned artists, most of whom have never been shown in the Baltic states. As a counterpoint, the Latvian National Art Museum is dedicating an exhibition to the evolution of Latvian graphic arts since the 18th century.
The exhibition offers an extraordinary glimpse into the international art scene through drawings by artists such as Robert Longo, Kiki Smith, Marlene Dumas, Giuseppe Penone, and French artists including Henri Cueco, Dove Allouche, and Anne Marie Schneider…
The selection of nearly one hundred works on paper highlights the diversity of approaches, techniques, and formats characteristic of contemporary drawing practice. It suggests a “shift” toward abstraction by revisiting themes explored by Latvian artists, such as landscape, maps, and silhouettes…
The exceptional donation by Florence and Daniel Guerlain represents a significant part of contemporary art within the graphic arts collection. After initially building a collection that included various types of art objects, they devoted themselves exclusively to works on paper. In 2006, they established the Contemporary Drawing Prize and, after each edition, donated works by the winner to the Centre Pompidou. In 2012, they donated nearly 1,200 works, which transformed the character of the Centre’s graphic arts collection of works on paper.
This exceptionally rich collection has been the subject of several international loans and exhibitions, including in Sweden in 2015, Denmark in 2016, Spain in 2017, and Austria in 2019. In 2017, the exhibition “Ten Years of the Daniel and Florence Guerlain Prize for Contemporary Drawing” was organized at the Centre Pompidou to celebrate the couple’s contribution to contemporary art.
