The Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències presents an open-access exhibition titled "Leiko Ikemura. Aquí Estamos", showcasing a series of six sculptures by Japanese artist Leiko Ikemura. This is the most significant exhibition of the artist so far in Spain.
All the figures, which are located in the southern lake of the Hemisfèric, hint at new and unknown creatures. Collectively, they form a lyrical stanza within the structural epic consisting of the architectures of the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències.
The large sculpture "Usagi Greeting" represents a hare-Bodhisattva, the mother of all existences. This hybrid being is hollow inside with an opening at the front of the skirt. Its long ears are similar to antennae indicating verticality, pointing towards the universe. The other pieces, also produced in bronze and with subtle colour patinas, consist of recumbent or reclining figures on light oval-shaped pedestals.
Leiko Ikemura was born in Tsu, Mie Prefecture, Japan. She currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. She is an internationally renowned artist with major exhibitions in important museums around the world. Institutions such as the National Art Center in Tokyo, Japan, the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland, and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, UK, among others, boast collections of her work.
