Leiko Ikemura: Mehr Licht!

The Museum für Asiatische Kunst is delighted to present this selection of old and new works by Leiko Ikemura on the occasion of the artist’s donation of the painting “Blue Horizon (marine series)“. The donation complements the museum’s current exhibition “Ambivalent Landscapes” in numerous ways.

Alongside seascapes of naval warfare and anthropomorphic landscapes of hope and change, new figurative sculptures of glass and bronze—as memento mori and concretizations of light—shed an ambiguous and fractured spotlight. The artist, who was born in Tsu (Mie Prefecture, Japan) and lives and works in Berlin, once again proves her mastery of a plethora of styles, techniques, and media with a nuanced palette and a subtle range of tones. Between the mountains and the sea, nature and humanity, life and death, the finite and the eternal, the contemporary and the timeless, perfection and non finito – out of the deep a hope shines forth: more light!
