From March 13, 2022, the Herbert Gerisch Foundation will dedicate itself to the internationally renowned Japanese artist Leiko Ikemura, who lives in Berlin and Switzerland. She has already been represented in the collection since 2021 with “Sleeping Figure in Red” in the Pfauenhaus, “Trees out of Head”, an artist's book and a portfolio.

The Peacock House, which Leiko Ikemura transformed into a new art venue for the Gerisch Foundation on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, already took up the artist's first central themes with the reclining girl figure “Sleeping Figure in Red” and her self-designed interior with delicate charcoal drawings. “When peacocks open their wings” now shows a comprehensive overall picture with almost 50 works from 40 years. The foundation is proud to be able to show this artist for the first time in northern Germany in a solo exhibition.

The listed Villa Wachholtz is showing large-format landscape scenes with amorphous creatures, horizon paintings, pictures of girls, early drawings and sculptures such as “Usagi with wings”, a glass rabbit with peacock feathers, the bronzes “Memento Mori” and “Bird Column” as well as “Fuji-Face” in terracotta. Current, delicate color compositions and the projection “In Praise of Light”, which can be enjoyed while seated, can be seen in the listed coach house. The spectacular, large bronze “Usagi Greeting” will remain in the park permanently after the exhibition.

An exhibition catalog will be published. A waiting list will be available at the opening.

"This comprehensive exhibition shows works from my oeuvre of the last 40 years. The works are not only presented chronologically, but above all grouped according to content. Throughout my long creative career, there has always been a coherent connection and development; certain themes such as nature, humans, animalistic creatures, plants and trees are recurring themes. I move freely in the various media, so that new terrain and areas of research are constantly opening up. Especially in the current crisis-ridden times, the sharpness of the artist's gaze and her commitment are highly timely in order to devote herself to themes such as the investigation of femininity, the relationship to the environment and the cosmic environment." - Leiko Ikemura
