The experience of viewing artworks in a museum can sometimes stir our emotions and evoke unexpected sensations and memories. Centered on the theme of such “encounters with artworks,” this exhibition presents approximately 70 works by 39 artists from Japan and abroad. The works have been curated from the vast contemporary art collection amassed by a single collector, focusing on diverse forms of expression that connect to the present. They are organized using simple keywords such as color, shape, light, line, people, landscape, and memory.
If we view contemporary art as “works created in the present era,” they may harbor perspectives and questions that resonate with us as we live in the “now.” Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) believed that art is completed through the viewer’s contemplation. We hope that even those unfamiliar with contemporary art will use this exhibition as an opportunity to engage in dialogue with the works, reflect on their meanings, and discover new ways to enjoy art.
