"Fly High: Visual Culture of Flight"

Admiration for the sky has always inspired artists’ imagination. In the domain of art, visualization of flying men (or flying man-like figures) has been realized for a long time. Painters and sculptors have represented invisible figures such as angels and celestial nymphs with great imagination. Meanwhile, human beings could not conquer the actual sky until the late modern period. Balloons, dirigibles and airplanes aroused artists’ interest not only in their sophisticated functions, but also in their attractive forms. The aircrafts became new sources of inspiration for both Western and Eastern artists in the 20th century.

This exhibition shows the passion for flight – both imaginary and actual - through almost 120 artworks including paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures, by artists all ages and countries, from SOGA Shohaku to PANAMARENKO. We especially focus on creative works trying to address the essential question, that is, how we make the impossible possible.
