"Du Nord. Collections du XVe siècle à nos jours"

MCBA - Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, Switzerland

As a new opportunity for the public to discover the Musée's collections, Du Nord offers an opportunity to explore them in the light of the major contribution made by the presence in their holdings of an important corpus of works by Northern European artists. In the 18th century, a taste for the "northern schools", and in particular the Dutch Golden Age, spread rapidly throughout Europe. At the same time, the art scene became increasingly international. Artists from the Vaud region trained or established themselves in the great artistic centers of the North (The Hague, Düsseldorf, Munich). Exchanges within Europe, and between French- and German-speaking Switzerland, intensified.

The end of the 19th century marked the birth of a reflection on the existence of a national scene where Latin and Germanic specificities were discussed. The Museum's acquisitions, as well as deposits from the Swiss Confederation and the Gottfried Keller Foundation, opened up widely to Northern production.

In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this openness had an impact not only on purchases, but also on temporary exhibitions. The institution's successive directors made a point of including artists from the North, whether they lived in French-speaking Switzerland or worked abroad. It is this spirit of openness, and the healthy wind it blows over the collections, that is reflected in an exhibition that occupies every room of the museum.
